Sanitation Services

Refuse & Recycling

The Sanitation Department manages trash, recycling, and brush collection, including bulky items and white goods. They provide special services for residents unable to manage their trash and recycling carts, and provide sanitation-related code enforcement. Contact Tausha Millwood to request set-out assistance, bulky item or white goods pick-up, or to report missed trash pick-up. You may submit an online pickup request by clicking the links to the left and right of this page.

Residents should refer to the Refuse/Recycling Collection Calendar to determine their trash and recycling pickup day. Refuse and Recycling must be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on your scheduled pickup day. All trash must be in trash bags for pick up. Grocery style bags are not acceptable. Loose trash inside trash cans will not be120469333_1659199467563284_1483233734813080149_n Opens in new window collected.  Do not place any items at the curb before 5 p.m. the day prior to your scheduled pickup date. Failure to comply with the set out time will result in missed pick up. Each week a maximum of 6 bags or 2 cans (any size residential can) of bagged trash will be collected. Residents may use any brand or size can they prefer, however the cans (click the cans link to view the image) with automated lift bars do work best for collection. Please refer to the Sanitation and Recycling brochures for disposal guidelines.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs

As of December 12, 2015, fluorescent light bulbs are no longer accepted at Fire Departments. The Buncombe County Landfill is permitted to accept fluorescent bulbs with regular waste, so you may place them in your garbage (the bulbs do not need to be in bags). For those wishing to recycle them, the following options exist:

  • Lowes and Home Depot will accept some fluorescent light bulbs
  • Fluorescent bulbs may be voluntarily recycled at the landfill on Household Hazardous Waste Days. Some fees may apply.

Additional Information

For additional information regarding disposal of non-acceptable refuse, call the Buncombe County Landfill at 828-250-5460.
