Our Assets

Our garden is modeled on Asset Based Community Development (ABCD). ABCD is an approach that recognizes the strengths, gifts, talents and resources of individuals and communities, and helps communities to mobilize and build on these for sustainable development. From utilizing wood chips and leaves from local businesses to leveraging relationships with local institutions and associations and relying on the talents and skills of hundreds of community members, the Dr. John Wilson community garden weaves together a web of reciprocal relationships

Bounty & Soul

We partner with Bounty & Soul whose mission is Together, we connect, share, and celebrate nutritious food, education, and community. The garden donated over 6000 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables to them in 2020.

Our Greenhouse Partners

Banner donates more than 200 plant start flats each year to Gardens That Give WNC, a regional network targeting food insecurity (started by McCall and other community leaders in the region). Fifty percent of these plant starts are grown at the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden and distributed annually at “Dig Day,” an annual event co-sponsored by Bounty and Soul and our garden. Each year, we work together to give away free starts and offer education for people to grow food in garden spaces and containers. We also receive annual donations of plants from Painters Greenhouses. The flowers, herbs and native plants we receive from Painters increase biodiversity and the overall vigor and beauty of the garden.
