RE: Lake Tomahawk Dam Repairs
State Dam ID: BUNCO-065
Lake Tomahawk Dam was constructed in 1934. In approximately 2010 the town performed work to remove large trees which had been planted to beautify and control erosion on the berm of the dam. In 2019 staff noticed seepage coming from the lower right area of the berm. It is believed that decaying tree roots left fissures in the berm which have contributed to the seepage.
The Town has worked with NC Dam Safety, NCDEQ and SM&E Engineers and obtained proper permitting and a repair design earlier this year. The Town has subsequently contracted with Bakers Inc. Construction to perform the recommended repairs which consist of overtop protection, a blanket & toe drain, articulating block, and a topsoil layer. Construction will begin in late January or early February 2024, weather permitting. Construction is expected to conclude by June 2024 or earlier.
During construction the walking trail will be closed at each side of the Dam and the lake water level will be reduced several feet. Citizens will also notice the removal of three utility lights across the top of the dam which will be replaced with decorative path lighting. Please visit the Town’s project pages on the website to view photos, timelines, and other updates on this project. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to the completion of this project as soon as possible to return enjoyment of the Lake to everyone.
