Town of Black Mountain
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Josh Harrold, Town Manager, Addresses Holiday Sanitation Service Disruption
BLACK MOUNTAIN, January 5, 2024 –
The week of December 24, 2023, citizens of Black Mountain experienced a scheduled disruption in sanitation services in which trash and recycling would not be picked up for three days. During the holiday season, dedicated sanitation workers took a well-deserved break to spend time with their families and recharge.
For the third consecutive year, the Town provided dumpsters at the Public Works facility for residents to dispose of boxes, wrapping paper and other bulky waste generated from holiday festivities to help manage household waste until sanitation services resumed on December 28, 2023.
The dumpsters experienced a surge in use, from individuals outside our community who utilized these facilities for household disposal. Some visitors and residents mistakenly assumed these bins were available for general waste, contributing to their rapid filling. The contracting company could not empty the dumpsters in a timely manner. Unfortunately, some individuals chose to dispose of the trash in the Public Works parking lot. The Black Mountain Police Department was contacted to see that orderly traffic and trash drop off occurred.
The Town expresses gratitude to the residents who diligently follow waste disposal guidelines and schedule, and deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by the temporary disruption.
Steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence of such issues in the future. Beginning this calendar year, no dumpsters will be provided. Instead, sanitation employees will take a limited amount of time off for Christmas, which should result in no disruption in services. The holiday schedule for 2024 is published on the Town website and social media pages and will be included in the February 2024 water bill.
Residents are encouraged to contact the Public Works Department at 828-419-9300, option 4, for any immediate concerns or assistance related to waste disposal. Additional information regarding sanitation services is available on the newly redesigned town website: www.townofblackmountain.org under the Public Works & Sanitation Services Department.
Residents are also encouraged to visit the Town website and sign up for Town Alerts using the Town’s “Notify Me” option. This “Notify Me” service provides citizens with the option to subscribe to receive text and/or email alerts, and updates concerning public safety, streets, trash & recycling, water, and office closures. Signing up is free and all you need is a valid email address. This is another tool the Town utilizes to keep our citizens informed. Simply look for the “Notify Me” icon on the Town’s webpage, or visit: www.townofblackmountain.org/AlertCenter.
The town appreciates the community’s understanding and cooperation during this time and remains committed to providing efficient and reliable services to ensure the well-being of all residents.
